How much is a Paso Fino worth? ›

The average Paso Fino horse costs $3,000 to $8,000. But the actual prices vary, depending on the age, conformity, bloodline, trainability, and show records, among other factors. Generally, young foals and fillies are the most affordable.

In addition to a genetic risk for DSLD, the movement kinetics of gaited horses can increase the risk of certain types of lameness in Paso Finos. Stifle lameness and hock lameness are the most commonly treated lameness issues in gaited breeds. Lameness can be challenging to diagnose in gaited breeds.

The Paso Fino can walk and canter like other breeds, but they prefer to gait. Their gait has three speeds called the Classic Fino, Paso Corto, and Paso Largo. The Classic Fino is very rapid but covers little ground, almost like running in place. This gait is used only for show and is the most difficult to perform.

The Colombian Paso Fino is very similar in size and look to the one from Puerto Rico but the Criollo as they are often called, tends to have a more rapid, piston action in their footfall and can perform additional gaits called the trocha and the trote y galope as well as the traditional Paso Fino gaits.

Size: 13 to 15.2 hands with 13.3 to 14.2 being the most typical size. Weight is 700 to 1000 pounds. Full size may not be attained until the fifth year. Color: Every equine color can be found, with or without white markings.

Do Paso Finos have health problems? ›

Although Paso Finos typically have good health, they are susceptible to degenerative suspensory ligament disease (DSLD).

If you're looking for a flashy, gaited horse that comes in a variety of colors, consider the Paso Fino. The one color exception is the leopard-coated Appaloosa, which isn't part of the Paso Fino's genetic heritage.

Paso Finos are generally smaller and narrower than Peruvian Pasos. The two breeds have similar gait patterns, although there are some differences. Unlike the Peruvian Paso, Paso Finos do not necessarily inherit their gait from their parents, even if they're purebred.

At whatever speed the horse travels, the smoothness of the gait ideally allows the rider to appear motionless with little up and down movement. The classic fino or paso fino is a collected gait with rapid footfalls that covers as little ground as possible. It requires a high degree of collection.
