Discussing CL made me realize why Soyeon will never be as big as Yuqi - allkpop forums (2025)

On the thread about why CL failed in comparison to Jessi Ho, someone brought out how CL's "badass" persona is just "for show", her real personality is very different. While Jessi's personality is more in tune with her on stage character. And people/audience could feel that through her variety appearances.

It made me think how Soyeon is similar to CL from that perspective. On stage Soyeon is fierce, confident and has a big presence, but her real self is more shy, introverted, and in some ways fearful of the outside world. Even so, she works hard and endures a lot to make her artistic vision come to life. She would often cry while trying to perfect her title songs.

Yuqi is brash and egotistical, and she carries that energy off and on stage. Even if a lot of it is played up, it is a real part of her personality. Especially in these post corona days people seem to like the immersiveness of artists who have continuity within their persona wherever they go.

A lot of kpop idols use a fake personality, I think soyeon is popular as Yuqi, I mean Yuqi excels in variety shows so she might be a little bigger. I never thought CL used a fake act, maybe I just can't notice anything. But companies usually force a look or personality on their idols so there more entertaining and bring in more fans so that's probably what happened with Soyeon, and Jessi pre debut did not act that way, she was more chill and normal.

She was still badass but IDK it's like she adapted this whole baddie personality. Maybe that's really how she acts IDK.

She reminds me so much of GD, so much talent, hardwork and vision.

G idle will always be just fine as long as they have their leader.

Yuqi is great, but Soyeon is much more of a key member for g idle's success than anyone else in the group and that's a fact.

There are plenty of other female idols (male ones too) whose stage persona isnt what they show off stage; like Jennie, Hwasa, Lisa, Soojin, etc so this arguement is flimsy at best.

Soyeon in 3 years has more respect from the industry then ggs with 5+ years activity and her talents will ensure she can find her footing no matter what, plus she is plenty popular so even if she isnt as big a stan attractor as Yuqi I have little doubt her lifelong career wont be one of the most influential among female idols.

Stop with stupid talk! I watched Jessi on the show where she said alone that it's not her real personality too, but it works. So she uses it. They all have personalities and it's ok and normal.
